Power Test

How Will Physical Fitness Be Measured?

The POWER Test consists of four scientifically validated fitness assessments designed to measure a candidate's readiness for law enforcement duties. Candidates are encouraged to complete five minutes of approved static stretching before testing. The test is administered in a specific sequence, with a five-minute rest period between each assessment and a fifteen-minute rest period before the 1.5-mile run.

Sit & Reach Test

The Sit and Reach Test measures the flexibility of the lower back and upper leg area. This flexibility is important for performing police duties that require a wide range of motion and also helps reduce the risk of lower back injuries.

The test involves sitting on the floor and reaching forward to touch the toes (or beyond) with both arms extended from a seated position. The score is recorded based on how many inches the participant can reach on a yardstick.

Preparing for the Sit and Reach Test

Regular stretching improves flexibility in the hamstrings and lower back, helping improve Sit and Reach performance.

  • Sit and Reach Exercise:
Perform 5 repetitions. Sit with legs extended, reach toward your toes while keeping legs straight, hold for 10 seconds, then return.
  • Towel Stretch:
Sit with legs extended, loop a towel around your feet, and gently pull while leaning forward to increase flexibility.

1 Minute Sit-Up Test

This test measures the muscular endurance of the abdominal muscles. It is important for police work that may require physical exertion and use of force, and it also helps support good posture and reduce lower back issues.

The score is based on the number of bent-leg sit-ups completed in one minute.

Preparing for the Sit-Up Test

The recommended training routine is to perform as many bent-leg sit-ups as possible in one minute, with your hands positioned behind your head. At least three times per week, complete three sets using the maximum number of sit-ups you achieved during your one-minute effort. This progressive approach helps build the strength and endurance needed for the test.

1 Repetition Maximum Bench Press

This test measures the maximum amount of weight that can be lifted from the bench press position. It evaluates the amount of force the upper body can generate, which is important for police tasks that require upper body strength.

The score is calculated as a ratio of the weight lifted divided by the participant’s body weight.

Preparing for the Bench Press Test

If you have access to weights, determine the maximum amount of weight you can bench press one time. Use 50% of that maximum as your training weight. You should be able to perform 8–10 repetitions at this weight. Complete three sets of 8–10 repetitions, increasing the weight by 2.5–5 pounds each week as your strength improves.

If weight equipment is not available, push-ups can be used as an alternative training method. Determine the maximum number of push-ups you can complete in one minute, then perform three sets of that amount at least three times per week to build upper-body strength and endurance.

Timed Run Test

This test measures the cardiovascular system’s ability to transport oxygen. It is important for police work that requires stamina and endurance, and it also helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular issues.

The score is recorded in minutes and seconds.

Preparing for the 1.5 Mile Run

A gradual training program is recommended to help candidates build the endurance needed for the 1.5-mile run. As your fitness improves, progress to the next level of the training schedule on a weekly basis. If you are able to complete the distance in less time than the training goal, continued improvement is encouraged. Consistent progression and endurance training will help prepare you for maximum effort on test day.
